Graduate students (2011-12)

The Department of Biological sciences at Eastern Illinois University provides opportunities for graduate students to take courses on and to do research in a myriad of branches including botany, ecology, microbiology, entomology, ichthyology, neurobiology, ornithology, physiology, phycology, endocrinology etc under veteran instructors. This diversity of courses widens the range of knowledge in biology and helps our students for their future in the work force or a Ph.D. program.

Research: I research methods to preserve cells through drying (lyopreservation) as an alternative to other types of preservation.  We use several animal models to elucidate the methods and compounds used by organisms that tolerate desiccation (Anhydrobiosis).  We also use bioengineering to transgenically express proteins in cells that cannot tolerate desiccation.
